Being plus size

Who says being big can’t be beautiful? Plus size models or some called it full figured models are making it big in the modeling industry. Take a look at Emme Aronson, being acknowledged as the first plus-size model to achieve widespread recognition in the United States. She hosts Fashion Emergency on E! and has appeared on most major US TV networks. She was named one of People magazine’s “50 Most Beautiful People” twice (1994 and 1999) and Glamour magazine’s “Woman of the Year” (1997). She has a collectible doll named for her, and bearing her likeness.

Thinking back, she vividly remembers her first assignment, in 1990, with a big-name fashion photographer. “I was getting made up,” she recalls, “I was all excited”—until she overheard the photographer complaining. “He said that he didn’t want to shoot a quote-unquote ‘fatty,’ “says the 5’11”, 190-lb. Aronson. “The ad agency had to talk him through it. He was nasty.”

The first time I came to know about plus size models were when I was watching America’s Next Top Model (I forgot which cycle). They had a guest appearance Kate Dillon, who came to talk about health issues. A once size 6 model, her life started changing when she overcame her health issue (anorexia), making a comeback in the modeling industry with a size 14.

I think the main point here is that being beautiful doesn’t exactly means being all skinny and bones. I’ve seen people, way skinner than me go on strict diet, not eating this, not eating that. And when they do eat, they start puking after. What’s the point man? And the most vexing part is when they tell me

”Eh, I’m fat. I need to go on a diet.”

I look at them and question “what about me then?”

And their reply was “you’re just nice, really”

Magazines, being communication mediums are partly at ‘fault’ for setting the mindset of people. They always show ‘must have figures’ to encourage sales of their product yet indirectly, they are affecting the way people view themselves. Although there are plus size models out there, how often do we see them? I don’t think there has been any in Singapore, are there? This shows that Singaporeans aren’t being expose much. Then again, on how one view their body is base on how much self confident one has. If you think you’re hot, no one can change that fact except yourself.

  1. some fat people are beautiful. hmm. i think its not a very popular idea however it may be true. fat are usually associate with sloppy and lazy and grease and whoknowswhat. i think the idea of big people making it as models and described as beautiful will need time to get used to it.

    • yea, i know what you mean. But being fat can be a good thing too, according to ‘the ugly truth’ people find it easier to forgive fat people! haha. well, whatever the case is, I hope that in time to come, Singapore would be more open.

  2. Hello! to comment please remember to key in your email!

  3. Come on guys we are not in cavemen’s era where fat people are pretty and skinny people are ugly its the other way round now .its very hard for the world to change its flow now, and why is that so ? .BECAUSE IF THAT HAPPENS Those people who went for lyposuction or whatever its called WILL CURSE AND SWEAR!

    • Jon, your reason is not accepted. Those who went for liposuction went not only because they were fat but also because they lack of self confidence. What about those that didnt went for lipo? Like the few models mention?

  4. looks good! good job with the post!

  5. plus size models, singapore, exposure.
all these things add up to be everything that is happening to the world now. and like what you said, it’s what you think nd feel about yourself that is more important. i would have to agree with your post.

  6. I agree 100% with your main point which being beautiful doesn’t exactly means being all skinny and bones. It is so shallow to think that only skinny people would be beautiful and being “big” would not. I think that the mindset of some people is sadly wrong, affecting the way they view themselves/others.

  7. i must agree that the forms of communication that we are exposed to does make alot of woman out there feel that there is a prefect figure which every lady must have and that how one view their body is also affected by how much of self confidence they have. but PLUS SIZE is definately the new beauty !! and not some skinny stick like figure as long as one feels beautiful and comfortable in their own skin i think that that is then real beauty (physically)!

    • the medium that we are expose to are limited. And yes, it makes women feel sad about their bodies if they are not a size 0. And again, I agree with you totally that feeling comfortable in their own skin would make them shine.

  8. I don’t know If I said it already but …Excellent site, keep up the good work. I read a lot of blogs on a daily basis and for the most part, people lack substance but, I just wanted to make a quick comment to say I’m glad I found your blog. Thanks, 🙂

    A definite great read..Jim Bean

  9. ya. i agree. fat does not mean ugly. it just mean you nid some self control. lets face it, given the choice who will rather be fat ? however, it does not mean that thin people is surely looking good

  10. Fat people? well, i have to say i have a few friends who are meaty but they have gorgeous features which makes them, good looking. I wouldnt go into inner beauty here cause i think its irrelevant. But it is also in inner beauty that we start to see another person who does not have that ‘model figure’ attractive and good looking.

  11. Being plus size is not a sin. Neither should it be judge by people. I totally agree with you that skinny people who insist that they are fat should just ‘f*k off’ and be contented.
I believe that its the way you carry yourself that makes a bigger first impression rather than just looks by itself. take a look at our so called ‘miss singapore’,Ris low. A classic/well known example, I dont need to elaborate.

  12. I stand firm on your ground that big can still be beautiful.

  13. people often think that they’re fat and not pretty because they’re not what they want people to see them as.

Which person dosen’t want to be beautiful?
Everyone wants to, but to other’s you’re fine because you have expetations of yourself.

For plus sized models, they’re comfortable with who they are, they accepted who they are. So why not? Feel sexy with the body God has given you.

  14. Be confident and accepting for who you are, so even if you’re big and have a bald head, so what?

  15. this is why some men has some fat fetish from women.
