Avatars

Avatars, what exactly is  an avatar?

According to Wiki; An avatar (अवतार, from the Sanskrit word for “a form of self”, commonly used in many Indian languages) is a computer user’s representation of himself/herself or alter ego, whether in the form of a three-dimensional model used in computer games,[1] a two-dimensional icon (picture) used on Internet forums and other communities,[2][3] or a text construct found on early systems such as MUDs. It is an “object” representing the embodiment of the user. The term “avatar” can also refer to the personality connected with the screen name, or handle, of an Internet user.[4]

To me, an avatar is what you think would most probably represent you.  As the communication technology(Internet) improves, more and more information about oneself can easily be found.. As such, there are times when one will not place one’s own picture online. (Take for an example, when you sign up for a ‘porn’ website, and have to choose a profile picture.) one would choose an avatar instead.

Your avatar speaks on your behalf, it shouts to the world how kind of person you are. Are you a fun loving person, or are you a dull and boring person. It all can be seen by what you choose as your avatar. However, these days, people no longer care about what they choose to represent themselves. They change their Avatars every so often. What does this tell you?

From my perspective, I feel that the reason why people change their avatars so regularly is because they themselves do not have a clear idea of who they are and have yet to reach the point of self actualization.

What are your views and say on avatars?

  1. Hello. Please remember to key in your Email!

  2. i find avater is something you WANNA be, not who you are already. if you put something that represent yourself. wont that be boring ? i mean the objective of having an avatar is like having a fantasy of who you rather be be it in real like or virtual.

    • That would be your perspective on things and I would have to say I didnt think of that POV. If what youre saying is such, how would you describe it if some one puts his or her avatar as a lion. Does that mean that he or she wants or aspire to be a lion? Or does it mean that he or she is like a lion itself. one that has a majestic aura, the ruler of the land?

  3. I think an avatar is a identity you want people to see you as, or someone you want to be like. Or oftenly used as an fake identity.

  4. it can be use as describing oneself. for example, you say lion. it could be the person wanna be as brave as the lion? not meaning wanting to be a REAl lion.

  5. to me, avatar is similar to what you’ve mention. i think it’s about how you want to bring out yourself. an image.. eg; superstar?

  6. Avatars is like your identity. They give people the first impression, i will judge based on that too, whether of which the person is like me , a dog lover who outs up a photo of a dog , or is attractive etc? but avatar = superficial.

  7. People are not fickle in their identities, they are just constantly seeking to identify and relate to all aspects of their individual identities.

Our rapidly changing society requires us to adjust and remain fluid in all aspects of our lives.

Within each of us, depending on the situation, there are various identities that we project. In some cases, we have yet to discover the identities buried within ourselves.

  8. I think that what you have mention is totally relevant and people these days find it harder to actually reach self actualization.

  9. I think that avatars are cover ups for people. when people choose to hide themselves, they use an avatar. Like take for an example, the movie “gamer”, in movie there is a virtual game played, I forgot the game name but its something like Sims, you are able to use another person to cover for what you are not. You could be a fat, balding, nose digging guy but your avatar could be a hot, sexy, pretty lady. Or a hunk, muscular guy.

  10. an avatar is where people hides themselves behind a mask from the society. However it could also be soemthing that they aspire to be or they think represents them most.

  11. people use avatars when they’re ugly like me and don’t dare to put up their own picture as people would always refer to as picture if there is isn’t it? So, it will be a good thing for ugly people like me to use an avatar as an identity I WANT people to see me as.

  12. avatar for your first impression for others, behind the big screen typing this.
